CIPD on bullying

It's a pity CIPD don't practice what they  preach

Quiz: Are you a bully?

Put your work demeanour to the test in our quiz

1. You need to call a team meeting but it’s nearly 5pm and some staff have children. Do you?
A Tell parents they don’t have to go but it would be a good idea if they did attend
B Expect everyone to turn up. Their childcare needs are not your concern
C Promise to brief those who can’t attend the following day

2. You’ve made a politically incorrect joke in the office that was taken badly. Do you?

A Not worry about it as everyone knows what you’re like
B Apologise immediately for any offence caused
C Do nothing. People shouldn’t bring their emotions to work

3. You hear a piece of juicy gossip about a colleague’s personal life. Do you?

A Share it with other colleagues. You could all do with a laugh
B Point out to the gossip that their behaviour is not acceptable
C Keep it to yourself – but do nothing about it

4. You’ve given a piece of work to someone but you’re not happy with progress. Do you?

A Sit them down to talk about how it’s going and then take appropriate action
B Take it away and give it to someone else
C Leave it with them but monitor their progress 3-4 times a day

5. Your colleague is already stressed but you really need their help to meet a deadline. Do you?

A Give them the work to do. You’re stressed too
B Enlist their help but promise them a day off in exchange
C Ask for an extension or see if someone else can help

6. You find a colleague annoying. Do you?

A Take time to talk to them about what would make the relationship easier
B Demand they stop doing whatever is irritating you
C Try to avoid them as much as possible

Now add up your score and check your answers below:

1 A (2 points); B (3); C (1)
2 A (2); B (1); C (3)
3 A (3); B (1); C (2)
4 A (1); B (3); C (2)
5 A (3); B (2); C (1)
6 A (1); B (3); C (2)

If you scored 6-9
On the whole you’re an angel, but watch out for the occasional lapse. We can all be bullies when we fail to take other people’s feelings into consideration.

If you scored 10–15
It may be wise to take a closer look at your behaviour as some of it is borderline and could be perceived as bullying.

If you scored 16-18
Whether you know it or not, it looks like you are a bully. Don’t agree? Take a long hard look at your actions and if you still don’t see the problem ask a trusted colleague for an honest second opinion.

Unite - A Union of ............

You may, or may not, remember (I hadn't) that I had chased Unite again.

Initially I had a promising sounding response

http://mikeyvtheworld.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/unite-responds.html

But it didn't last long

http://mikeyvtheworld.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/unite-update.html

Despite a couple of chasers, I have still received sweet FA.

This does nothing to change my opinion that Albert Graham & the Union were paid off by UPS.

Further backed up by the fact that I never received any details (as I requested) of Albert's report to the Police, nor a visit from the boys in blue.

Having now, briefly remembered, I've sent them another e-mail

Compensation, Davis style

D. Scott Davis

Executive Compensation

As Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at UNITED PARCEL SERVICE INC, D. Scott Davis made

$10,694,321

in total compensation.
Of this total
$1,049,703 was received as a salary
$426,034 was received as a bonus
$463,675 was received in stock options,
$8,714,617 was awarded as stock and
$40,292 came from other types of compensation.
This information is according to proxy statements filed for the 2012 fiscal year

$10,694,321 in 2012

By my googling I make the lowest exchange rate 1.54, which equates to the princely sum of £6,944,364

That average exchange rate for the year was 1.58, which equates to £6,768,557

That's not bad for being dishonest. I wonder what he'd get if he was being honest?
Probably less as this would affect the profits.

£7 million eh?

Remember that figure

The Teamsters say
UPS CEO Scott Davis is a prime example of the inequality between what a CEO makes
and what the average worker makes.
He makes in one hour what a worker makes over the course of a year.
"All UPS seems concerned about is profit. UPS hourlies are pushed to their max and real
safety concerns do not exist anymore.
"UPS ought to put people before profit and employee safety and customer satisfaction first."

UPS v DHL, working time directive

Part of an e-mail sent out by DHL this week. Just to show that DHL have the same interpretation on the law as I do.

For clarification on working time directive, a break MUST be taken whilst out on route and within the first 6 hours and must be a minimum of 30 minutes (we build 60 minutes in to the RDT / MRM).

Now why do UPS CONTINUE to think that they are exempt from this directive?

Talking of UPS safety

UPS (@UPS)
"We have 110,000 drivers, log 3 billion miles a year & average less than 1 accident per 1 million miles.” bit.ly/18teX02

I wonder how UPS work that one out?

In 2011, if I remember correctly, which is quiet possibly unlikely given the current state of my memory, and I can't be bothered looking for the paperwork. Quiet possible it may be with my solicitor anyway.

Where was I? UPS. Accidents. UK. 2011.

I think that there were at least 1200. Just in the UK alone, and these were just the ones that were declared. Remember even the safety department tried to hide some of the figures (Manager was sacked or demoted)

The UK is just a tiny proportion of UPS's worldwide employees, so just which figures did they use?

I have asked...........I'm still waiting for a reply.

More from the NTSB

Strict enforcement??

What could distract UPS drivers? Bullying?

You have to act, not just talk about a safety culture, NTSB on safety

When it comes to safety, UPS are found sadly lacking.

NTSB (@NTSB)
It will take much more than simply changing the laws, it will also take strict enforcement and education to save lives. #NTSBMWL#ItCanWait
NTSB (@NTSB)
The more voices who can speak against distracted driving, the faster we can bring an end to it. #NTSBMWL#ItCanWait

UPS IT Dept - Keeping the fraud alive

UPS (@UPS)
UPS avoids left turns for safety & sustainability. IT provides optimum routes that have saved 10 million gallons of gas! #UPSsusty

This would be the same IT Department responsible for the fraudulent DIAD programming.

I wonder which saves more money, the number of fraudulent POD's or the saved fuel? Bear in mind this practice has been sustained for many years. Probably since the DIAD's inception.

& add another driver to the list of those saying that the DIAD has not been reprogrammed since I left the Company.

Glassdoor

Comment from Glassdoor

“3 yrs union, 5 management, should have stayed union.”

Part Time Supervisor (Former Employee)
 Ontario, CA

I worked at UPS part-time for more than 8 years
Pros – Co-Workers were amazing, still stay in touch.
Cons – Management is racially biased, sexually harassing, oblivious to ethics.
Advice to Senior Management – Listen to your people.
Oblivious to ethics
And another

Cons – The hours for managers are very, very long. Working with union employees and the inability of holding them accountable becomes something of a running joke. 100+ late occurrences and you STILL cannot fire an hourly? Really?
Chicago politics would have a tough time keeping up with the shenanigans here. Don't cross your boss or you will end up in Siberia driving a package car.

Siberia?

Driving a package car?

Not just me then

Hello number 77, Ghana

Formed from the merger of the British colony of the Gold Coast and the Togoland trust territory, Ghana in 1957 became the first sub-Saharan country in colonial Africa to gain its independence. Ghana endured a long series of coups before Lt. Jerry RAWLINGS took power in 1981 and banned political parties. After approving a new constitution and restoring multiparty politics in 1992, RAWLINGS won presidential elections in 1992 and 1996 but was constitutionally prevented from running for a third term in 2000. John KUFUOR succeeded him and was reelected in 2004. John Atta MILLS took over as head of state in early 2009, but he died in July 2012 and was succeeded by his vice president John Dramani MAHAMA, who subsequently won a December 2012 special presidential election.
