Woman hit by UPS truck dies

Posted: Nov. 8, 2011 | 5:32 p.m.LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

A 69-year-old woman died Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a UPS truck in the south valley, Las Vegas police said.
The crash occurred at 3:13 p.m. in the 2500 block of Swan Ridge Avenue, near Pebble Road and Eastern Avenue.
The name of the woman was not released. She was pronounced dead by medical personnel. Police initially said she was 50 but then later corrected her age and said she was a Henderson resident.
Police identified the driver of the UPS truck as David McCallum, 41, of Las Vegas.
Police spokesman Marcus Martin said late Tuesday afternoon that the crash occurred in a residential neighborhood and that it was too early to determine who was at fault. The Metropolitan Police Department's Fatal Detail was investigating. Police said the crash was the 60th vehicle-related fatality under the jurisdiction of Las Vegas police in 2011.
From the comments box;
  • Monday thru Friday UPS and FedEx fly down my street which is in a quiet, residential neighborhood. I dread the day when I hear brakes squeal and someone is hit. And, it's true they work on a time frame which encourages them to race through their route. That has to stop!
  • Green Dragon, you know nothing of me or what I stand for. You didn't need to turn this into some partisan, class-warfare issue or whatever you want to call it. Facts are facts and the fact is UPS does have strict time requirements of their drivers. They may have a good driving record overall and I commend the drivers themselves for that but non the less they are pushed to the limit. Its about safety to me and nothing else.
  • It is a fact that UPS gives each driver a specific time, depending on their route, to make their deliveries. No excuses. Stops Per On Road Hours means they have a time limit and they are held to it within minutes and sometimes seconds. Don't hold to that time and they are given a working suspension. Like most corporations like UPS, time is money. And pushing less people to do more, especially those using a heavy vehicle, is asking for a tragedy. Of either the worker or someone else. My heart goes out to the woman's family but also the driver who has to live with what happened.
  • It's a known fact that UPS and Fedex drivers have been cut in numbers, forcing them to make more deliveries in a given day. That's why they fly through neighborhoods. When UPS delivers to me, it takes less than 30 seconds. Grab the package, out the door, ring and drop, and on to the next one. The corporate attitude is do more with less. I'm not saying it's the drivers fault, as it appears the pedestrian just stepped out in front of him, but the workload could be a contributing factor.
  • UPS FLIES down my street and reading these other posts sounds like it's not just my street or one driver.
