Something I submitted for one of our weekly meetings, it followed a message from our great and glorious, and was passed down to the minions.
Subject
Avoidable accidents were on the increase.
Safety;
Following Jim's comments on Wednesday on a lack of a safety
culture,
Our Management do not practice what they preach.
I cannot
maintain a safety culture because of the pressures that are imposed upon me by
my immediate Managers, who in turn blame their Managers for the pressures that
are also placed upon them. If the message from the top is safety and the message
from the bottom (drivers) is safety, who in the middle is forcing our hands?..............
Discuss
From a Centre Planning Meeting 2009
Drivers want to be safe, but their Centre Managers push them into cutting corners.
Steve O'Donnell blamed Rob Burrows for the targets that were being set, Rob Burrows would have blamed......etc, etc, etc but where would it stop?
Was it just a smokescreen from Jim?
Ahhhhhhh!!!!!
Discuss.

Smoking in Company Vehicles
|
England
Regulations relating to smoking in company vehicles came into force on 1 July 2007. The position is that:
- enclosed vehicles which one or more persons use for work will be no-smoking premises and covered by the ban. The ban applies to cars, vans and lorries at all times if they can be used by one or more persons, as driver or passenger, in the course of paid or voluntary work – regardless of whether they are in the vehicle at the same time;
I didn't get a reply
Enclosed vehicle, yes
Use by one or more persons, yes
van, yes
driver, yes
paid work, yes
Banned? Yes
Action? None
Blind eye? Yes, it is Company Policy to ignore rules, regulations and the law, it would seem.
#morebackground
Managers and shared Company cars should also get a mention.

Here's a few lines,
In “The Godfather,” we watch Michael Corleone go from idealistic, youthful, and ethical to violent, depraved, and dishonest.
He wanted to change it, to improve it. But once he committed his first crime, he became immersed in the world he had vowed to reject.

UPS Parrots
My solicitor keeps asking me why we had to learn everything parrot fashion.
He doesn't understand why everything had to be learnt word for word.
I have been unable to give him much of an answer.
It may be that by being able to repeat word for word the manuals or procedures, the Management can convince their employees that they know the job, and can, or have been, competent at the job. I have shown how many rules and laws have to be broken for employees to be able to achieve the targets that are being set. It is no use being able to quote things word for word if you are setting impossible targets.
It was quite clear that most of the senior management couldn't perform as drivers when they were called upon. Several of them claimed to be the best drivers in the world, but strangely, or not, when given the opportunity, failed to impress.
Rob Burrows, under absolutely no pressure at all, couldn't even park his car to UPS procedures, let alone do it under the pressure of being out on road in a working environment. His answer was to have an argument with safety department, how, in effect, he was special and outside the rules. He was still a UPS employee on UPS premises,
Don't have the actual proof, but I know that in an area less that 2 miles from the Dewsbury Centre, Rob couldn't manage 4 stops an hour. Bear in mind that even with stem mileage (travelling) a normal driver would average more than twice this number. Most of the drivers travelling to Hull, for example would be able to hit 8 stops per hour.
Richard Watts couldn't drive his car under normal circumstances. Oh the pressure of trying to park in a supermarket car park. That's park his car, not a van. How many accidents was it Richard? Being a Manager, no disciplinary action taken.
District Manager Jim Barber was described as the worst driver in the Company, having followed him down the motorway, I can see why. (Nothing to do with being on the phone....of course)
Talking of Hull
Another point from the talk with the driver yesterday was that, as expected, the number of stops being given to drivers is still increasing. This means that many of the drivers continue to come in to work early (unpaid) and leave the building before their start times, to ensure that they can complete the amount of work that they have been given. This means that there breaks will not be recorded accurately, if they are even taking a break. Remember, the driver last week said that he had been told to key a break into his DIAD, whether he had taken one or not.
(all the Hull drivers had departed early yesterday, he said)

Hello France
Interesting to see which posts are being read this morning, and where.
As fraud posts seem popular....
Spoke to another UPS driver yesterday.
He is another employee who says that the DIAD has not been re-programmed or updated in relation to the time that the clock can be stopped on a delivery. This means that when a driver is running late for a timed delivery, or is held up for any reason, he, or she, can stop the clock on the DIAD to ensure that the delivery does not fail. As previously stated this means that the money back guarantee for failed deliveries is bypassed.
What Mr. Customer? You say that the delivery arrived late? No, our electronic records show that it was delivered on time, you must be mistaken.
Only a small sample so far, but that is 100% of drivers that I've asked.
Not that UPS would deny it, nor would they confirm that a change to the programme had been made, as that would prove my point.
My point? That is, one of the points that was denied in my grievances.
There has currently been no contact from any UPS employee denying that this happens. Surely someone in the
Employees: 399,000 Worldwide (323,000 U.S.; 76,000 International)

would want to try and prove me wrong. Thing is, they can't, can they?
There has been contact from employees supporting me, (without the anonymous cloak), come on the rest of you prove me wrong. Anonymously if you want.

Fraud - More back up
Another conversation with a current UPS driver yesterday
I've known him since he started with the Company about 14 years ago.
I have no reason to disbelieve what he said to me, he's a driver, not management :-)
He too confirms that the DIAD has not been re-programmed to stop drivers being able to stop the clock on deliveries that they know are going to fail. The fraud continues.
He also said that he is still expected work through his breaks. Since I did my surveys and investigations he said that the stop counts have continued to raise. The driver stated that he has been told that he should just key in his dinner break whether he takes one or not, and to key it at the correct time to avoid infringing, whether he takes it then or not. He said that there is no investigation when he infringes, as he is being told by the Company that this is what he has to do.
I'm pretty sure that a report could easily be run to show drivers who are making deliveries when the DIAD shows that they should be on a break.
But hey, who cares? UPS & VOSA don't.

Sink Rate
UPS Flight 1354
16 seconds prior to the end of the recording, Robert Sumwalt states that sink rate can be heard as a warning.

From the Youtube comments
"Sink rate"......in other words, if you continue to sink at the current rate, you will impact the ground before you reach the runway. I think the modern planes even have a line or a range marker on their flight display that graphically SHOWS you where you will intersect with the ground. ideally that would be on the runway. They also use that feature to help them level out at their assigned altitude. It's a great tool.
i.e. you are going to crash
Why didn't the crew pull out? No fuel?
I have also seen fatigue mentioned.
UPS in the UK are not bothered about employees being fatigued, why should it be different in the States?
Do the NTSB have more clout that VOSA?

Fraud-How it works
There may be some jargon in here.
A driver is set an impossible task of trying to deliver a premium product by the Company.
When queried by the driver, the usual statement from the Company to the driver was that, it can´t fail. In other words, you´ll have to cheat.
As an example, a driver at Dewsbury, used to have an Express Plus delivery in Skipton. That is a 9.00 commit time. His start time meant that it was impossible to make the journey and reach the delivery by 9.00.
At any point in that journey, or even while still in the centre at Dewsbury, the driver can stop the clock on the DIAD. This means that the delivery time will show as the time at which the clock is stopped, 8.30 for example. This means that the delivery, whilst still on road, has not failed. No failure, no money back as per the guarantee.
The DIAD created 3 sets of GPS points. 1 when the package scanning screen is accessed, as in the example above, and 2 others, one of which is the completion of the delivery on pressing stop complete. The stop complete option, at the end of the delivery is not used for the time of delivery. I wonder why? =
I have raised this issue for at least 6 years. Why did nothing change? I would guess that it would take a couple of minutes to alter the DIAD program, there has even been a completely new DIAD released. This still enables the driver to stop the clock and cheat on the delivery. As at today, I have been told by a UPS employee that the option to stop the clock is still available, and that the driver himself had found it necessary to use this option a number of times recently.
UPS complaints, which are referred as concerns, are dealt with at call centre level. The PCA´s are not told that the DIAD generates these GPS points. This could help resolve disputes where customers are insistent, sometimes with CCTV evidence, that the driver wasn´t where he said he was.
Similarly, these GPS points would also show whether a delivery had been genuinely attempted, when scanned as closed. Drivers would regularly scan multiple deliveries within a very short time. It would have been impossible for the driver to have actually attempt these deliveries. If a delivery is scanned closed, within what are classed as working hours then the delivery doesn't fail, again no money back guarantee. If the delivery is correctly scanned as an NDA (Non delivery attempt or missed) then the customer will get a refund.
It did not make any difference who I reported these issues to.
Centre Managers, Division Managers, Security.
Security should have been jumping on these issues.
What happened?
I had a meeting with Simon Eyers at KFC in Dewsbury where he took notes. He failed to remember this meeting or produce the notes for my grievance meeting.
Chris Marchant, held a cowboy grievance meeting, despite the weight of evidence that I produced.
Lorraine Burke. Where Managers failed to recall anything that I had raised, Lorraine remembered instantly, some of the issues raised, but then failed to follow up.
Duncan Adair, during an AVSEC course complained about the lack of integrity within the Company.
Chris Robbins and Randy Grimes of Compliance and Ethics failed to follow up correctly with the issues that I raised through the BEQ.
No-one within the Company was prepared to tackle this lack of integrity. With the Head of Security involved and senior management involved, its hardly surprising.
In addition to the (accurate and honest) information contained in my grievances, I now have a number of PCA's (Call Centre) and security technicians who are making the same statements that I am
