Glassdoor - Tyrants, hostility, robots

Making life work...

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at UPS
Pros – It is a company that prides itself on being #1. The pay is great and benefits are good.
Cons – They work their employees to death and the hours put in does not match the pay. They don't seem to understand a work-life balance.
Advice to Senior Management – Treat your people more like humans and less like robots.

Good benefits, but you'll need them for how little they care if you're starting on the ground.

Package Handling/International Clerk (Former Employee)
 Columbus, GA

I worked at UPS part-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Free health insurance, M-F schedule, can be a good workout... or dangerous if you're unhealthy
Cons – high pressure/stress environment, lack of regard for the employees on the ground, Center/District management avoids replacing workers who have quit or been terminated in an effort to bolster the "pieces per hour". This last part usually results in those that are doing the labor to spread themselves thin running between anywhere from 2-5 stations in the warehouse to pick up the slack. Generally, middle management does not help in these scenarios because they are not allowed to by contract but if you have a good supervisor he will help because upper management simply will not hire anyone else and he see's the effect it has on the employees remaining - even if it is breaking the rules.
Advice to Senior Management – Never leave your laborer's short-handed, regardless of how small your center is. Those employees care just as much about being overworked at the same pay rate as anyone working in a main hub.

Can be better

Intern (Current Employee)
 Atlanta, GA

I have been working at UPS part-time for more than a year
Pros – Great exposure to technologies and business.
Contribution to the community.
People were nice.
Cons – Poor management - no communication between senior management and the employees.
Career growth opportunity - Low
Pay scale compared to competitive companies - Low
No proper age balance within project team, which eventually reflects upon the energy level.
Doesn't appreciate 'out of box' thinking and not flexible to accept new ideas.
Funds for the projects - Low
Business oriented and not value oriented.
Advice to Senior Management – Acknowledge young leaders and provide opportunities to young blood in upper management.
We know it took years for the current leaders to come to the top management positions, but believe me now a days the kids are smarter than some of the top management folks.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

What can brown do for me? How about pay me a decent wage for a tough job.

Driver Helper (Former Employee)
 Tinton Falls, NJ

I worked at UPS full-time for less than a year
Pros – Good workout. Get to work outside. Day goes by quickly.
Cons – Very low pay until you become a full time teamster driver. Unfair treatment of hard working employees by management. An atmosphere that promotes dislike and hostility between management and workers. Talent is not recognized or appreciated by management.
Advice to Senior Management – Pay a decent wage to avoid such high turnover and low morale. Rework the manager/worker paradigm that currently exist to promote better functionality.

Great working culture, but slow full time job progression

Part Time Supervisor (Current Employee)
 Cleveland, OH

I have been working at UPS part-time for more than 8 years
Pros – Benefits, culture, work experience, training, union experience. If you can reach full time, the pay is good. Also, even as a part-time employee, you are granted a certain amount of vacation weeks based on length of employment
Cons – Hours of operation are usually inconvenient, some people in management are more like tyrants rather than managers and the progression to get full time employment is SLOW
Advice to Senior Management – Consider treating employees with respect and dignity and you will in return create a more enjoyable working environment

Terrible

Part Time Package Handler (Former Employee)
 Columbus, OH

I worked at UPS part-time for less than a year
Pros – None unless you want to stick it out for ten years and become a driver
Cons – Terrible hours, bad supervisors, hard labor, and low pay. They throw you into packing four trucks at once, which is about impossible to get done before you figure out a system.
Advice to Senior Management – Give more training, don't expect people to stay at a bad job for a year
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

It is high pressure and very hectic

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at UPS
Pros – Fun co-workers to work with
Cons – Unrealistic working demands, horrible benefits, and not enough compensation for the responsibilities required
