I for one don't hold with the excuses made last season for David Moyes.
Ageing squad? only Giggs and Ferdinand have retired at the end of the season, wouldn't Mata & Fellaini have been young enough to replace them?
Vidic is only 32 and going to Inter, so isn't exactly past it.
Vidic also played a lot more games last season than in the previous one, and both he and Ferdinand have been injury prone over the last few years.
The squad should have had a year's more experience not be ageing.
Ferguson got the title out of that squad, Moyes presumably bought to improve it. He had been lined up for the job for years, so it's not beyond the bounds of credibility for him to have known where the squad needed strengthening.
Of the rest, lets have a look who's playing in Brazil
De Gea Spain
Smalling England
Jones England
Fellaini Belgium
Evra France
Valencia Ecuador
Mata Spain
Welbeck England
Januzaj Belgium
Rooney England
van Persie Netherlands
That leaves;
Nani Portugal
Kagawa Japan
Hernandez Mexico
There's not many old players there, unless you count Evra at 33
That's a 4-4-2 with Fellaini as a centre back.
with Lindegaard, Fletcher, Cleverley, Young, Carrick, Raphael, Evans, Vidic, Giggs & Ferdinand also on the bench* as international players.
That's 24 international players.
*+ anyone else I may have missed
It's about the ability to motivate players and that didn't happen much last year.
