The fantasy world of Steve O'Donnell

The e-mail from a forum member reminded me of a few other issues.

I was on holiday this time last year. I was in Spain when I received a call from my fellow supervisor, Dan Walton, telling me that Steve was plotting something and he thought that it was necessary to warn me.

When I went into work on the Tuesday, I asked Steve what he was plotting he denied that there was any plot.

Quite bizarrely by Thursday he was saying that Lisa Bradshaw from HR wanted to come and see me. (She denies this and says that it was Steve who was arranging the meeting)

Steve and I discussed a number of things when he told me about this planned meeting so I put down a few thoughts;

Lisa

With reference to a performance improvement discussion with Steve O’Donnell on Thursday 2nd June 2011

Steve says that you want to come and see me. I would be more than happy to see you, the sooner the better. I’m available anytime (subject to being sent out on road almost everyday since before Easter). If it’s essential that I go on road I can come in early or stay late at night, come in on a Saturday or Sunday, I don’t care what time you want to make it.

Steve mentioned a number of subjects on Thursday night.

  1. CDP
  2. 340 methods
  3. S & V certification
  4. Dave Dwyer’s disciplinary

I had been forewarned of some sort of conspiratorial conversation between Steve O’Donnell and Scott Winfield, as a colleague thought it serious enough to ring me while I was on holiday in Spain. When I challenged Steve on Tuesday morning he had nothing to say. Similarly Scott Winfield who had, allegedly, taken part in the conversation also denied that this conversation had taken place.

CDP

I was only told that my CDP needed doing, after the original expiry date had passed. Why has it been so important to complete it this year when in previous years, false information has been input to say that discussions have taken place. Just like pay reviews that haven’t happened for the last two years.

On Wednesday 4th May, Steve O’Donnell asked me to plan myself in the following day so that I could complete my CDP. It was no surprise to me that I was planned out on road the following day with approx 75% of a day’s work. I told Steve O’Donnell that I would complete my CDP when I came back in the afternoon. (Steve claims that he didn’t hear this). I told Steve what work that I had been given, he managed to hear this, and went away to verify with preload what I had been given. He never returned and the workload had 2 additional postcodes (HD2 & BD5) added to it by the time I left the centre. I was contacted at lunchtime to see what time I would be finishing. I said that it would probably be about 15.30-16.00, but Steve wanted me back in the centre.  I was put onto Steve, by Liam Higson, who told me that I had to go and meet a Leeds driver, as Leeds had helped us by recovering a sick driver of ours from Hull. I returned to the centre at approx. 18.30.
Steve claimed on Thursday night that there were other days where I was planned to do my CDP. If this is true, I wasn’t told about it. I was planned out on road every day until Friday 20th May, whether driving or doing meaningless productivity rides with drivers who didn’t have area knowledge of the routes that they were covering.
On Friday 13th May I was contacted by Pauline McQuillan whilst I was out on a full run. She wanted to know why I hadn’t completed my CDP. I told her the situation and Pauline was going to speak to Steve O’Donnell and Craig McIntosh who were both together in Dewsbury. I never got a call back from Pauline, Steve or Craig. No days were made available for me to stay in and do my CDP. I also stated to Pauline that I had been on road so much that I had to cancel my Doctor’s appointment.
On Friday 20th May, my first day in since before Easter, I had 339 unread e-mail, plus more that needed to be actioned. In addition to normal dispatching, we had a Centre Planning Meeting, BQA review, 5 weeks of driver holidays to update and approve, monthly QPR figures to input, Aprils expenses to submit, (still to be done) just to name a few tasks plus my re-scheduled Doctors appointment at 15.30. Not surprisingly, something had to give and I told Steve it was very unlikely my CDP would be done.

2nd June – On road – James Roy’s run.
2nd June 18.00 conversation by Steve telling me I’ve been avoiding doing my CDP. I ask him when I should have done it.

When was it possible for me to have completed my CDP in the last month?

340 Methods

Following on, Steve then claimed that I’d been avoiding my 340 methods certification.
Whilst it is true that I queried with Craig Scott the sense in me trying to do a run that I’d only done a couple of times before. I did not cancel the ride. If this is the case, why did I phone Craig Scott to find out where he was on Tuesday 17th May? No-one told me that the ride had been cancelled.

Texts to/from Craig Scott 16th May
MW     16.58   Can’t see the point of tomorrow, on James Roy’s run. Can we re-schedule?
CS       17.00   You can do methods in his P80 cant u?
MW     17.00   Not on a full run I don’t know
CS       17.00   Thought ud been on it a week
MW     17.04   Only odd days not a full week
CS       17.05   What postcodes does he do?
MW     17.17   WF8 & 11
CS       17.20   Fkin doddle, jst put it in drop order before I get there

Where exactly did I cancel the ride? More UPS lies. Last message, Craig is coming.
Rides were also cancelled by the Company on 6th April & 29th March. Not cancelled by me.
There have been many other dates when the Company has cancelled my certification ride. Again I had no hand in this and I can’t be ar*ed looking up any more dates. I scratched my run in September; I scratched my drivers in September. Why have I not been certified? I repeat again. I have not cancelled any rides. Why in 8 months have the Company not been able to arrange one date to complete this ‘important’ task. We were being chased by Nigel Marsh for this to be done. I completed my side of the training, the Company has failed to complete its part of the training.

I answered an e-mail from Nigel Marsh on 8th September 2010, copying in Rob Burrows, regarding certification for 340 methods.

“Nigel, There has been no plan for me to go out on road yet. My instructions have been to concentrate on rides with the drivers.”

Nigel answered with, “Mike, I will need dates and details for you, just as I do for every other mgmt person in the district. Rgds, Nigel”

Nigel, My instructions were from my Manager.
Your implication is that I have decided not to do this.

I planned and prepped a route on Tuesday with a driver ride.
I planned and mapped the route on Wednesday when I came in and was taken off, just as I was about to leave the building, being given a different route instead.
I completed this second route to find that I had been taken off and planned back on the original route the following day.
On Monday I was then given another different run, which I have done for 2 days only to be taken off again.
I’m now planned back on the original run, which I’ve done for 3 days.
Monday 4th – Planned inside
Tuesday – BRM, cancelled and sent out with a cover driver to reduce his over and under times, on the same run that I am supposed to learning.
Weds – Ditto
Thursday – 340 methods ride with a driver who had no area knowledge, therefore map reading all day, just to get productivity.
Monday11th – Planned inside
Tuesday12th Planned out on 340 methods with Gavin Agus, aborted to take over Graham Pearson’s run
Weds 13th - Planned out with Gavin Agus (Send again's more important than my 340 methods)

27th October - Planned myself on Tim's run, taken off and changed to Ahmed
28th planned myself on Tim's run, sent to reportback

25th November - Dennis's run, 3 over max, Keighley collections, local collections added, still scratched

29th November - Local deliveries
30th November – Assessment ride with Dan on Dennis's run cancelled (no conversation), accident follow-up with Neil Hodgkinson, Dan not on road
1st December - Certification ride cancelled, no conversation. Phone call from Shayne, not Steve, Tues 20.08 to say on Mirfield & HD

Despite being shipped from pillar to post, by a combination of Rob & Steve, I still managed to scratch the run on the first day that I attempted it. Again, was this me avoiding my 340 methods certification?

Has Steve O’Donnell scratched any drivers yet?
Has Steve O’Donnell scratched a run yet?
Has Rob Burrows scratched any drivers yet?
Has Rob Burrows scratched a run yet?

If the answer to any of those is no, will they be on performance improvement plans?

S & V

I was not aware that my certification had expired. No-one has mentioned this to me. I have no idea how long our certification lasts. My original training was one day with Dave Kryska in 2000, my only other training was in Oct 2006. Based on these dates I would have expected my certification to have expired in 2012. Is this an adequate amount of training for our ‘safety conscious’ (sic) Company?
Again I have not ducked out of any training, contrary to what anyone is trying to imply. Again I re-iterate no-one has told me that my certification had expired and that includes Thursday 2nd June & Friday 3rd June when Matt Gale was in the centre.

Dave Dwyer disciplinary

Steve asked why I hadn’t disciplined Dave Dwyer regarding tachograph offences. I said that I had asked Jane Secker to print details of Dave’s last months tachograph charts. On reviewing these charts, I spoke to Dave and asked him about one day where he hadn’t taken a break. Dave stated that he had a hospital appointment and had worked through his dinner to ensure a prompt arrival at his appointment. I told Dave that he should have spoken to Preload and had his day’s work reduced. I had a commitment from Dave not to work through his dinner break again, whatever the circumstances. Steve had a few days away from the centre and on his return I spoke to Steve and explained why I hadn’t taken any further action. I said that I thought we were victimizing Dave when we were turning a blind eye to other repeat offenders. Steve changed tack and said that I needed to discipline Dave for failing to follow my previous instructions, as per a Pittsburgh entry. Dave needed disciplining for disobeying me. I said that if Steve wanted Dave disciplining then I would do it, but the meeting closed with Steve saying that he would speak to Dave to review what I had said to him and whether I had made my comments serious enough. I said that I had even spoken to Dave’s wife Rebecca about previous tachograph offences. The meeting ended with Steve saying that he would speak to Dave and then get back to me. To date he has not spoken to Dave Dwyer.

Also raised in the past few weeks is the CRB paperwork. You have already seen my e-mail about this. (3rd June 2011, 12.46) Again, in my opinion, it appears to be another set-up.
The implication from Barbara was that Steve had lost all Dewsbury’s paperwork as none had been done by the centre.
Then Steve was adamant that he had given the form to me.
Finally his story changed again to him giving the form to someone else to give to me. (Though no name was mentioned)
Your e-mail asks which address it was sent to and, as far as I know, as I can’t check, my address is correct in HRIS. So was it posted? I received nothing at home. That’s 4 different versions so far.
So which story was correct?
Despite asking for a replacement to be sent, as at 18.00 on Thursday 2nd June, I had not received it.

So how can I fill in form that I haven’t been given or received?

If Steve’s memory of events is so good, why did he forget to turn up for a disciplinary for Kevin Gowen who was represented by 2 Union men who had traveled from Tamworth?
Did I feel a pratt trying to explain that to John Boodle and Albert Graham?
Will Steve be on a performance review for that?

It comes as no surprise to me, that having submitted a grievance of a serious nature, that within 3 months my work is suddenly under scrutiny and I am being questioned about my performance. If you read the above thoroughly you can see that it is a set up. When I queried my performance with Steve O’Donnell on the morning of my grievance hearing, Steve said that he had no issues with my work, only with some negativity, which given the nature of my grievance is hardly surprising.

With reference to my grievance hearing. I have been extremely upset by the content of the notes and appendices that were given to me at the start of the meeting. Initially I thought that this had just been done to rattle me, which it did. It is only in the subsequent weeks that I have realized the full implications of what was said. The whole process is a joke. It stinks. Has nobody put 2 and 2 together about all the notes and appendices and the lies that it contains.

I assume that you compiled the notes and appendices. There were no details of the person given. What were the responses from Howard Stone, Randy Grimes and Richard Watts? In my opinion the content of the notes and appendices are a pack of lies or I’m a compulsive liar. By that I mean that the statements given to you were a pack of lies, not that you were contributory to the process. You compiled the notes in good faith that the Managers were being honest with you. I believe that there was sufficient evidence to show that it wasn’t me that was the compulsive liar. How many Dewsbury employees did you speak to? Did you ask any of them if they thought that there had been any integrity issues amongst the Dewsbury manager’s? Shayne Williams, Andrew Croft & Emma Stott all think that there has been. How many names do you need me to compile before anyone will believe me. Try asking Mark Burnard as well. I’m sure that he’ll back me up. I have to find people with the balls to stand up to the Company. My personal referees should be all the people in my grievance, but rather obviously I can’t trust them, can I? I have 4 people on my side. What does that do to the statements that were made in your notes and appendices?

Am I a compulsive liar or is there a collective denial of the facts because no official grievance was ever made?

I have already started compiling a grievance response letter. As I don’t know who Chris Marchant’s Manager is, who should it be sent to? If you wish to see the content you can have a look when you come down to Dewsbury.

If a Manager’s spoken comments have been written down and then presented to me, if what I have stated for 10 years is true, accurate and correct, does that make it slander or libel

If there is a vendetta against me? Isn’t that retaliation, which is against Company policy?

What about our poster?

Have the past 10 years not been a report and investigation of acts of dishonesty?
Are the denials made in your notes and appendices a continuation of this wholesale policy by employees?

There is one course that I said I couldn’t go on. The Company gave me 3 days notice of a one week course. Despite being told that one weeks notice of a half hour Doctors appointment wasn’t sufficient notice.
Having a wife and 2 children was not the main reason for me saying I wasn’t available. It would have been possible, even with only 3 days notice, to arrange necessary childcare. I’m sure that Rob Burrows would conveniently forget that I had a Doctors appointment with a specialist. Not a run of the mill GP appointment, many of which I’ve cancelled. This was an appointment that I had waited several months for it to come through. Canceling it would have meant another long wait for the appointment to be re-scheduled.
